Yoga, Mindfulness & Meditation with Michelle Chua

Picture
Global travel has been my catalyst for personal discovery and transformation.  I love immersing in down-to-earth cultures that awaken open-mindedness, harmony with nature, the joy of simplicity, living wholeheartedly and appreciation of diversity.  Ultimately, my adventures abroad have been teachers for living my Yoga and Mindfulness practice.

Michelle began practicing Yoga in 2001 and has been guiding Yoga since 2010.  Read her bio here.  Read what past retreat participants have to say here.

A helpful tool for seeing our habits more clearly is to step outside of our daily norms of places and routines.  Through the lens of mindfulness and Yoga that we'll explore on Inner compass, Outer Dance retreat, we'll practice non-judgmentally observing our thoughts and inner patterns.  Our teachers will include new situations, the people we travel and share new adventures with, our Yoga and Meditation practice, our bodies, nature, the different cultures and just about everything!  As you’ll see in the abundance of temples in Northern Thailand, the cultures we'll immerse in value spiritual awareness and mindful living, so it's a perfect setting for applying our Yoga and Mindfulness practices in daily life.

We'll dive into compassionate self-awareness practices that empower our freedom to choose our focus and actions so that they authentically align with how we intend to show up in our daily lives and what we choose to create.  This soulful journey outside of our daily norms is a calling to attune to your inner compass, that wise discernment within, and surrender into the flow of your unique dance, that is, how you move through your outer life journey when you courageously allow the wholehearted expression of your inner being.

Our 10-Day Itinerary

Much loving intention, first-hand research, collaboration with locals and passion inspired this itinerary!  Travel along the Mae Hong Son Loop rainforest countryside, and stay in beautifully rejuvenating accommodations along the way to immerse in local life. The following is our intended flow of activities, which may change based on weather, our group's needs and availability of tours and sites.  (Included meals are indicated as B, L and D for breakfast, lunch and dinner respectively.)
Day 1 – Sunday, October 20 (D)
Check-in time is 3pm at our sweetly welcoming 4-star hotel in Chiang Mai, about 20 minutes drive from the international airport.  If you arrive earlier in the day, drop off your bags and unwind with a grounding stroll to acquaint yourself with the neighborhood.  Find temples, massage spas, the city cultural center, cafes and markets just a few minutes away.  Before dinner, meet your traveling Yoga community for our Opening Circle to ground, meditate together and consciously connect with your retreat intentions, each other and the land.  We’ll enjoy our first meal together, chatting about local etiquette and our 10-day itinerary.  Renew your energy for the journey ahead with a goodnight’s sleep adjusting to the time zone.

Day 2 – Monday, October 21 (B, D)
Wake up to freshly made breakfast at our hotel.  We’ll ride about 30-45 minutes north to Mae Sa Waterfalls in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to practice Forest-bathing Mindfulness and Meditation.  Then, try the local cuisine at lunch on your own at a restaurant en route to our retreat center in Pai, about 2.5 hours north.  There, we’ll check-in and relax with free time before enjoying a healthy locally sourced dinner and cultural dance performance and lesson.

Day 3 – Tuesday, October 22 (B, L)
Start the day with calming Breathwork and Meditation and move your body mindfully with Flow and Restore Yoga, (which is a hybrid of active Vinyasa Flow and Restorative Yin stretch) and Group Reiki Energy Healing with live handpan by a local musician in our retreat center’s spacious shala, fully equipped with props.  After a deliciously nourishing breakfast, we’ll explore the surrounding nature at the famous Pai Bamboo Bridge and hike to a local waterfall.  Return to the retreat center for a nutritious lunch and free time.  If time permits, you might schedule a massage or spa treatment at a local spa with our guest discount.  In the evening, hop on the group shuttle ride to Pai’s walking street to freely explore the markets and restaurants for dinner on your own.

Day 4 – Wednesday, October 23 (B, L, D)
Begin the day with Breathwork, Meditation and energy-balancing Flow and Restore Yoga and
Group Reiki Energy Healing accompanied by live handpan music in the shala.  After a nourishing breakfast, we’ll check-out from our retreat center and head north for about 2.5 hours to the quaint peaceful town of Mae Hong Son.  We’ll stop for a traditional Northern Thai lunch in the enchanting city center and walk around the lake with elegant temples in the backdrop.  If time permits, we may visit a Thai Buddhist Temple, a cultural landmark in the area; Otherwise, we may do this on Day 6.  We’ll arrive at our eco-lodge with views of Mae Surin Waterfall National Park, just a 10-minute hike away.  Enjoy some free time to unwind in your cottage overlooking verdant rice fields, swim in the infinity pool or lounge with an afternoon tea at the café.  Then, gather together at the lodge’s restaurant for dinner with your travel mates.  After, enjoy free time.  You might cap the night with walking meditation around the luscious property.

Day 5 – Thursday, October 24 (B, L, D)
Start the day intentionally with Breathwork, Meditation and Flow and Restore Yoga and
Group Reiki Energy Healing in the open-air shala.  We’ll have a plant-based breakfast in the on-site restaurant.  Then, choose your midday adventure: a) Lounge by the pool and get a massage; b) Go on an athletic river-crossing 4-hour hike deep in Mae Surin Waterfall National Park; c) Go easy on a gentler shorter nature walk; or, d) Pre-book and hire a private driver to tour Mae Hong Son city on your own.  We’ll all reunite at dinner in the eco-lodge restaurant.  We’ll cap the night together with Flower Meditation guided by Mukta, a local Yoga teacher and friend.

Day 6 – Friday, October 25 (B, L, D)
Welcome the new day of possibilities with Breathwork, Meditation and Flow and Restore Yoga and
Group Reiki Energy Healing.  After breakfast on site, ride 1.5 hours north towards the Myanmar border to a hidden gem called Ban Rak Thai, a beautiful village settled by Chinese immigrants renowned for their production of high quality tea.  There, enjoy lunch and a mindfulness practice of tea tasting by the lake.  Then, we’ll take a 30-minute ride on a longboat, the local mode of transportation, to a Karen Hilltribe village to participate in their ceremony for connecting with Mother Earth and watch their cultural dance. We’ll spend some time learning the artistic traditions of this indigenous group, often called the Long Neck tribe because the women wear rings around their neck to elongate it. Shop for authentic artisan crafts here directly from the artists.  Then, we’ll enjoy dinner at a restaurant, visit a temple (if we didn't have time on Day 4) and return to our eco-lodge.

Day 7 – Saturday, October 26 (B, L, D)
Begin the day rejuvenating your mind-body-spirit with Breathwork, Meditation and Flow and Restore Yoga and
Group Reiki Energy Healing.  After breakfast, we’ll check-out and head about 2.5 hours south back to our retreat center in Pai.  On the way, we’ll have lunch and enjoy a private mud bath treatment and massage at a natural hot springs luxury spa.  Arrive at the retreat center with a refreshed glow and gently stretch your body with Sunset Soul Movement intuitive dance and Yin Yoga accompanied by live handpan music under the stars.  Dinner will be served at our retreat center.  Then, enjoy the night of free time.

Day 8 – Sunday, October 27 (B)
Wake up well rested and fortify your peaceful vitality with Breathwork, Meditation and Flow and Restore Yoga and
Group Reiki Energy Healing accompanied by live handpan music in the shala.  After a healthy nutritious breakfast, we’ll say good-bye to Pai and continue the drive further south about 2.5 hours to Chiang Mai, the city you flew into.  There, we’ll check into our 4-star hotel, surrounded by restaurants, markets, cafes, massage spas, temples and hotels that you can walk to.  Within 5 minutes walk is the Old City, where the famous Sunday Night Market is held and you can find street food, souvenirs and artisan crafts.  Lunch and dinner are on your own, so that you can explore the area more freely or book a tour at additional cost through the hotel or a nearby tour center.

Day 9 – Monday, October 28 (B, L, D)
Start the day early with boxed breakfast provided by our hotel as we ride about 1 hour away to Elephant Nature Park, known as one of the most ethical elephant sanctuaries in Asia.  We’ll connect and play with rescued animals and learn about their life stories and new way of living in freedom.  Witness how these magnificent creatures immerse in the present moment.  Plant-based lunch is included.  Then, we’ll head back to our hotel for free time.  Relax by the pool, rent a bike, get a massage or visit a museum.  Be back before sunset for Meditation in the garden and ride together nearby to a traditional Lanna Khantoke Dinner, which is a Northern Thai feast with cultural show.

Day 10 – Tuesday, October 29 (B)
Gather for our Closing Circle and Meditation in the hotel garden Yoga space before our last breakfast together.  Check-out time is at 11am, and Chiang Mai International Airport is about 20-30 minutes drive away.

Michelle truly lives out what she teaches. She is so much more than a yoga teacher - I learned this when I went on her exquisitely curated trip that she organized to Costa Rica this past June 2018...Hopefully like me, you'll be delighted by her effervescent love of movement, nature, and all people!

Michelle clearly stands out with her beautiful and bright energy. I love how her practice and teaching encompass body, mind and spirit. She not only teaches yoga but lives and exudes it.
-Marianne Manes (Los Angeles, CA)
Michelle not only teaches 'yoga', she embodies it fully with her heart and soul...
-Christin M. (Los Angeles, CA) *See more YELP Reviews
Michelle is by far one of the best instructors I've ever had, period. Patient, clear in her explanations and demos, and so encouraging...
-Jessica L. (North Hollywood, CA) *See more YELP Reviews
My first yoga class was with Michelle years ago.  You can have the best (yoga pose) sequence and not teach from your heart.  With Michelle, I also feel her passion when I'm in her class.  I can see she loves what she does, and she inspired me to want to teach yoga, too.

I'm so grateful to have met Michelle! Her kind energy opened up my interest in pursuing yoga and meditation. She is such an incredibly light and soul. She starts with grounding ourselves through mindfulness and breathing exercise. She brings the most authentic energy to the class by sharing the history and understanding behind poses, names, and techniques. I truly appreciate her work and impact on my well-being!
-N.C. on Yelp!
I’ve had dozens of instructors over the years, but Michelle is far and away the best yoga mentor I’ve ever practiced with. She epitomizes grace during these difficult times. Michelle has saved my sanity and my back while working from home, keeping me grounded with her sharing of yogic teachings and meditation techniques. Her repertoire of physical asanas is encyclopedic, and I’ve loved learning new poses and stretching my boundaries. Jump in, all. You’ve got this!
